Lhasa de Sela

April 27, 2010

I was shocked and saddened to discover that Lhasa de Sela had died.  She was only 37.  She died of cancer on New Years Day, a piece of news that I had somehow completely missed. She was a unique songwriter with a wonderful voice full of passion and emotion. Her songs were deceptively simple, sometimes dark and often a bit mysterious. Lhasa was born of Mexican /American parents and lived in Montreal. She sang in French, Spanish and English. Her last album was in English but I think Spanish suited the range of her voice better. You can read an obituary at http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/jan/06/lhasa-de-sela-obituary.

If you have never listened to her music before you really are missing out. This is the title track of her last album called Lhasa Rising.
